As one of Las Trampas’
most important contributions to the community, it was a priority to renovate
the aging and outdated buildings that house our day program. Today, thanks to
widespread and generous support from the Contra Costa community, our new facility
incorporates state-of-the art accessibility features and world class technology
specific to the growing needs of people with intellectual and developmental
disabilities (IDD).
These features include
push-button and automatic doorways, changing rooms for adult hygiene,
elevators, ADA-compliant ramps, and more. Full-spectrum lighting replicates
natural lighting, which reduces adverse visual stimuli for individuals with
autism. Additionally, our innovative consensual quiet spaces are separate from
classrooms, with walls acoustically designed to minimize auditory distraction
for people on the autism spectrum with sensory sensitivities.
This modern new
building, combined with our person-centered educational programming, breaks
down barriers to access and independence for our participants, allowing them to
experience social, vocational, and recreational fulfillment on their own terms.
Stops
on our tour will include:
- Our ADA-compliant
teaching kitchen, which allows participants to develop cooking skills to
support them to live independently one day. Our kitchen includes low counters
and an oven at a lower height with French doors for easy wheelchair access, an
induction stovetop to avoid burns, and both residential and commercial
dishwashers to prepare participants to do dishes in their own home and in a
work setting.
- Our garden, where
participants learn the value of cultivating plants, including fruits and
vegetables. They learn to purchase seeds, plant them in our garden, and tend to
them as they grow. We then use the fruits and vegetables in our teaching
kitchen to encourage healthy eating.
- Our dance and exercise
room, which is designed to provide individuals with opportunities for movement
and is accessible to people with profound physical disabilities. Classes may
include: music and movement, yoga, Zumba, wheelchair and in-seat exercise, and
mindfulness.
- Our beautiful art room,
a favorite among our participants.
We
hope to see you here!
